Executive Staff Dan Barry - Vice President of Development. Daniel, CFRE has been a fundraising Consultant for over 32 years and has served as the Vice President of Development for the Institute for over 18 years. Dan is involved with all fundraising activity for the Institute. Dan is a Providence College graduate and lives with his wife, Carolyn, and two children in Narragansett, RI. dbarry@internationalsport.com (401)874-5275 Thomas Brendler - Grant Writer. is a writer on the Institute’s development team, and a contributing writer to Providence Business News and a stringer for the New York Post. Most recently, he served as Communications Director at the Big Picture Company, helped the Big Picture Company, a Gates-funded network of innovative high schools across the country, and Executive Director of Groundwork Providence, which provides education and job training to hundreds of low-income youth and adults across the city every year. For 11 years before that, he built and managed the National Network of Forest Practitioners, a diverse alliance of loggers, mushroom pickers, wilderness guides, small sawmills, and tree huggers dedicated to sustainability and social justice. In 2002, he was a delegate at the World Summit on Sustainable Development where he co-founded a global coalition of peasants, communities, and indigenous peoples. Earlier in his career he worked at the Ford Foundation and in public news broadcasting at WGBH-Boston and Globalvision’s South Africa Now. He holds a Master’s Degree in Forestry from Yale and B.A. in English from Tufts. His paintings featuring housepaint and garbage have been exhibited locally, he is the former lead singer for the New Haven-based Charismatic Megafauna, and in 2006 he was voted one of Rhode Island Monthly’s “25 People to Watch.” tbrendler@internationalsport.com Cecilia Clark - Director of Cultural Activities and Special Events. Cecilia is originally from Berkeley, California. She graduated from Bates College, in Maine, with B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Cecilia has always had a passion for sports; she was a four-year varsity soccer player and senior captain, at Bates, and has worked as a sports medicine intern for both Bates College, as a student, and for UC Berkeley’s football program after graduating. Cecilia returned to school for her graduate degree at the University of Wales, Bangor. Cecilia received her MS in Sports Science from the University of Wales, Bangor, this September, with a concentration in leadership and coaching behavior. Jerry Creamer - Director of Hall of Fame Press, Director of Sport, Associate Director of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition he is a member of the grant writing team and will help coordinate the sporting events at the United States Scholar Athlete Games for the summer of 2008. Laurie DeRuosi - Administrative Assistant Deb Doermann Burch - Co-Coordinator – Hall of Fame Press Alyssa Freda - Assistant Director of Operations and Athletics. Alyssa recently moved back to the United States after completing her Masters degree in Sports Management overseas in Australia. During her studies, she implemented a business plan for a local Netball Association and also worked with the Australian Olympic Committee on the Pierre de Coubertin Awards Ceremony for the state of Queensland. Her educational background in Exercise Science and Sports Management, combined with her work and overseas experience, has been excellent preparation for her role with the Institute. Currently, Alyssa is a Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach for the University of Rhode Island Softball team. Don graduated from Bates with a BS in Chemistry and has a master's degree in Chemistry Education from Central Connect State University. Early in his career, Don taught Chemistry and Physics as well as coached basketball and soccer at a high school in Connecticut. Lauren Hylton - Director of Media Relations. Lauren Hylton comes to us from Rochester Hills, Michigan and is a graduate from Western Michigan University with a degree in Organizational Communication and Public Relations. Paul Kelly - Senior Accountant Dr. Malcolm Mac Kenzie - is Vice President for International Interests & Planning. Malcolm has either been Director of International Recruitment (1993 and 2006) or responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean (1997 and 2001) of each World Scholar-Athlete event. He has held executive management positions in educational, religious and social organizations both in America and overseas. Tyler graduated from Gettysburg College with a B.A. in business management. He is a Canadian citizen but resides in Hartford, CT. Tyler began working with The Institute during September of 2007; he has assisted in the development of the 2008 Scholar Athlete Games. Michael Payton - Vice President of Marketing and Institutional Advancement. Michael joined the Institute team on December 2007. He brings to this new position over 20 years of extensive experience across a broad range of leadership roles in brand management, sports and events marketing, communications, public relations and government & community affairs. He has contributed his experise to bulding market share for many of the world’s foremost consumer products and sporting goods brands including Reebok International, Adidas/Ssolomon, CCM, Greg Norman, Mizumo USA, Fischer of America and Fila. Prior to joining the Institute, Michael served as the Chief Development Officer for a national health care charity. Michael also founded a successful sports events management and product publicity consultancy firm, The Payton Group, and established or directed popular middle- and long- distance road races in his adopted home state of Rhode Island. Originally from from West Hartford, CT, Chris joined the Institute in April 2007 after graduating from Middlebury College in February 2007 with a B.A. in Economics. He has served as the Director of the Renaissance Games, Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games and National Sportsmanship Day during his time here. Bob Stiepock - Senior Grant Writer. Bob admits to being an aging member of the staff, but only in the way that a vintage wine might be considered seasoned. A member of the brilliant stable of writers on the Institute’s development team, Bob has taught writing at schools ranging from West Point on the Hudson to Harvard on the Charles. He takes pride in having been a volunteer writing instructor at the inaugural World Scholar-Athlete Games in 1993 and now is pleased to be able to work again with the irrepressible entrepreneur Dan Doyle. bstiepock@internationalsport.com Whitney Thomas - Assistant Director of Operations. Whitney is originally from Southborough Massachusetts. She is a recent graduate of Middlebury College where she received a B.A. in political science, with a minor in psychology. At Middlebury, she was a member of the varsity swim team, elected captain her senior year, and played club water polo. In addition, Whitney was heavily involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Middlebury. Whitney is excited to be at the Institute where her two passions, sport and politics, are fused to exemplify the power of sport in building community. Ralph brings to his position of Liaison to NAIS Schools a career in independent schools from teaching and coaching to administration. He and his wife, Marci, have worked in both day and boarding independent schools from Maryland to New England. During his teaching years, Ralph coached boys’ and girls’ teams from the Middle School level to Varsity teams in soccer, football, tennis, and wrestling. His work is to foster a strong partnership between the independent schools and the Institute for International Sport’s Scholar-Athlete Games and its other programs, especially the programs to bring people together from all parts of the world as a means to foster international communication. rvaninwagen@internationalsport.com 401-874-9080. Erica Wheeler - Chief of Staff, Commissioner of The 2008 US Scholar-Athlete Games. Erica Wheeler joined the Institute in February 2007 coming on as Director of Development and soon moving into the Chief of Staff position and most recently was named the Commissioner for the 2008 US Scholar-Athlete Games. Erica received a full athletic scholarship to Stanford University to throw the javelin. After graduating in 1990 with a BA in psychology, she dedicated herself to making the Olympic Team and went on to make the 1996 Olympic Team in Atlanta, GA. Erica retired after 24 years of elite level competition in 2004 and then went on to receive a Master's degree in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College graduating in 2006.
